About This Artifact

The Mughal Painting Tradition

The Mughal emperors — who ruled northern India from 1526 to 1857 — were among history's great patrons of painting. Beginning with Emperor Akbar (r. 1556–1605), who established a royal atelier of painters drawn from Persia and India, Mughal painting synthesised Persian miniature tradition with Indian stylistic conventions and European naturalism introduced by Jesuit missionaries at court.

This miniature depicts the classic Mughal theme of romantic love in a garden setting — a theme with deep roots in Persian lyric poetry (particularly the works of Hafiz and Rumi) that the Mughals adopted and transformed into a distinctively Indian visual language. The composition shows a royal couple in an evening garden, surrounded by flowering plants. The gold pigment and the quality of the colours — lapis lazuli (Afghanistan), vermillion, malachite green — indicate a court atelier production.

Technical Mastery

Mughal miniatures were painted on wasli — a composite support made of multiple layers of paper beaten and burnished to a smooth, ivory surface. Pigments were mixed with gum arabic binder and applied with brushes made of squirrel hair, sometimes using single-hair brushes for the finest details. The faces of the royal figures show the psychological depth that distinguishes the finest Mughal portraiture from all other traditions.
