About This Artifact
The Art of Byzantine Ivory
Constantinople — the capital of the Byzantine Empire for over a thousand years — produced ivory carvings of extraordinary refinement, particularly between the 9th and 12th centuries. Carved in imperial workshops, these panels served as luxury devotional objects, reliquary covers, and diplomatic gifts for the highest echelons of Byzantine and Western European society.
The Koimesis — the "falling-asleep" (dormition) of the Virgin Mary — is one of the most important subjects of Byzantine iconography. The scene depicts the Virgin lying on a bier surrounded by the apostles; above her, Christ holds her soul in the form of a swaddled infant; angels descend from heaven. The composition compresses the entire theology of the Theotokos (God-bearer) into a single image.
Carving Technique
Byzantine ivory carvers worked in high relief, sometimes undercutting figures so that they nearly detach from the background. The quality of this example — the differentiated expressions on the faces of the apostles, the complex drapery folds, the architectural canopy framing the scene — places it among the finest workshop productions of the late Macedonian dynasty period.
