About This Artifact
The Art of the Celts
The La Tène art style — named after a Swiss archaeological site on Lake Neuchâtel — flourished across Iron Age Europe between approximately 450 BCE and the Roman conquests. Characterised by fluid S-curves, triskele (three-armed) spirals, and stylised zoomorphic (animal-form) designs that continuously transform and metamorphose, La Tène metalwork is one of the most distinctive and influential artistic traditions in European history.
The penannular ("almost circular") brooch was the standard dress fastener of the Celtic world. This example, in cast copper alloy, displays the characteristic Celtic tendency to make purely functional objects — a dress pin — into vehicles for highly sophisticated abstract ornament. The zoomorphic terminals facing outward, the carefully balanced curves of the ring, and the precise casting quality indicate the work of a skilled Celtic smith working in a tradition of extraordinary technical refinement.
Celtic Metalworking Tradition
Celtic metalworkers were among the finest craftsmen of the ancient world. Their mastery of lost-wax casting, repoussé hammering, filigree, and granulation in gold, silver, and bronze produced objects of lasting beauty. The Roman historian Diodorus Siculus, writing in the 1st century BCE, noted that the Celts wore torques of gold and bracelets of gold and silver, "with a love of finery that is not unbecoming."
