About This Artifact

The Art of the Japanese Sword Fitting

In feudal Japan, the katana was the embodiment of the samurai's soul and social rank. The decorative fittings of a sword — particularly the tsuba (guard) — received extraordinary artistic attention. Master metalworkers formed distinguished schools whose lineages spanned centuries, and the finest tsuba were considered collector's objects even during the Edo period itself.

This tsuba is crafted in shakudo — an alloy of copper with a small percentage of gold that, when treated with the traditional rokushō patination solution, acquires a lustrous blue-black surface unique to Japanese metalwork. Against this dark ground, inlaid designs in gold, silver, and cloisonné enamel (shippō — literally "seven treasures") create compositions of jewel-like intensity.

Cloisonné on Metal

The shippō technique involves dividing a metal surface into cells (cloisons) using thin metal wires, then filling each cell with coloured glass paste which is fired to produce enamel. Japanese shippō — particularly of the Edo period — achieves a translucency and subtlety of colour gradation unmatched in any other metalworking tradition. This tsuba demonstrates the full mastery of the technique.
