About This Artifact

The Sacred Herds of the Sun

In the Inca Empire (Tawantinsuyu, "four quarters of the world"), llamas were central to the state economy, religion, and cosmology. They carried goods along the qhapaq ñan (royal road), provided fibre and meat, and were sacrificed in their thousands at state ceremonies. Gold and silver miniature camelids — known as qori cawra (gold llama) and qolqi cawra (silver llama) — were among the most sacred objects of the Inca state cult.

This figurine is hammered from sheet silver and gold alloy into the characteristic camelid form: four legs splayed for standing stability, a long arching neck, and a slightly open muzzle suggesting a braying posture. The gold details applied to the silver body — visible at the ears, nose, and hooves — identify this as a mixed-metal piece of the highest quality, associated with the most important sacrificial contexts.

Capacocha Ritual

Capacocha (sacred sacrifice) was the most solemn ritual of the Inca state. At moments of cosmic crisis — an emperor's death, a solar eclipse, a military catastrophe — the Inca sent precious offerings to mountaintop shrines throughout the Andes. Miniature llamas like this one were buried alongside other offerings and, in the most important ceremonies, alongside sacrificed children who became divine intermediaries between the human and spiritual worlds.
