About This Artifact

The Divine Kingship of Angkor

The Khmer Empire (802–1431 CE) at its zenith controlled much of mainland Southeast Asia from its capital at Angkor. The empire was organised around the devaraja ("god-king") concept: the ruler was held to be an incarnation of Shiva or Vishnu, and the state temples were conceptualised as the cosmic mountain at the centre of the universe.

Hevajra is a wrathful tantric deity of Vajrayana Buddhism — a multi-armed, multi-headed figure surrounded by flames, whose appearance encodes deep esoteric teachings about the nature of emptiness and compassion. This bust, carved from the distinctive grey sandstone of the Angkor region, shows the characteristic Khmer facial type: the broad, serene brow, the level eyes with their enigmatic half-smile, the elaborate headdress of stacked elements — all expressed with extraordinary sculptural confidence.

Late Angkor Style

The late 12th to early 13th century was a period of intense building activity under King Jayavarman VII, who constructed Angkor Thom and the Bayon temple. The Buddhist iconography of this period — departing from the Shaivite tradition of earlier Angkor — produced some of the most distinctive and recognisable sculptures of Southeast Asia.
