About This Artifact
Jade: The Sacred Stone of the Maya
For the ancient Maya, jade (jadeite specifically — the harder, rarer variety) was the most precious substance on earth, surpassing gold in value and sacred significance. The colour of jade — varying from apple green to blue-green — was the colour of water, maize, royalty, and the divine. Maya rulers were buried with jade masks over their faces and jade beads in their mouths; jade was literally the currency of the dead.
This pendant is carved in the form of a bird — probably a parrot or macaw, birds of great ritual significance in Maya culture, associated with the sun and with communication between the human and divine worlds. The carving exploits the natural colour variations of the jadeite: the brighter green areas have been positioned to highlight the bird's plumage, while darker veins of the stone suggest feather markings. The suspension hole through the neck was drilled using a tubular jade drill — a technique of extraordinary patience.
Motagua Valley Jadeite
The jadeite used in Maya objects comes exclusively from the Motagua Valley of Guatemala — the only source of true jadeite in the pre-Columbian Americas. Analysis of this pendant's material confirms Motagua Valley origin. The trade of Motagua jadeite across the Maya world — and into Central Mexico — was one of the defining economic relationships of Mesoamerica for over two thousand years.
