About This Artifact

Obsidian: The Sacred Glass of Mesoamerica

Obsidian — volcanic glass formed when silica-rich lava cools rapidly — was the most important cutting material in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. In Aztec (Mexica) cosmology, the black mirror of obsidian was the medium through which the god Tezcatlipoca — the "Smoking Mirror" — looked into the future and judged the actions of humanity. Obsidian blades were simultaneously practical cutting tools and sacred objects connected to the highest levels of Aztec religious practice.

This large blade was produced using pressure-flaking technique — using an antler or bone tool under extreme pressure to remove precise, minute flakes from the edge, producing a cutting surface sharper than any metal knife available to the Aztec world, or indeed sharper than a modern steel scalpel. The quality and regularity of the flaking on this piece — the parallel ridges running the full length of the blade — indicate the work of a master flint-knapper of the highest skill.

Source Material

Mexican obsidian sources could be identified by ancient peoples through colour, lustre, and trace-element chemistry. The black obsidian of this blade originates from the Sierra de las Navajas quarries in Hidalgo state — the primary source for Aztec state production, located approximately 100 km northeast of Tenochtitlán and controlled directly by the empire.
