About This Artifact

The Golden Age of Iznik

The ceramic workshops of Iznik (ancient Nicaea) in northwestern Anatolia produced, between approximately 1480 and 1700, what many connoisseurs consider the finest painted ceramics ever made. Patronised directly by the Ottoman sultans — their tiles lined the walls of Topkapı Palace, the Süleymaniye Mosque, and the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem — Iznik potters developed a distinctive fritware body (quartz-rich, brilliant white) and an unrivalled palette.

This dish is painted with the naturalistic bird-and-flower compositions that characterise the finest Iznik production of the 16th century. Two birds face each other across a central spray of flowers — a composition evoking the paradise gardens of Islamic tradition. The birds are rendered with close attention to plumage; the flowers include tulips, carnations, and hyacinths.

The Iznik Palette

Iznik's characteristic colours — cobalt blue, turquoise, sage green, and the famous "Armenian bole" red applied in slight relief — were achieved through precise control of the kiln atmosphere and the chemistry of the lead-alkaline glaze. The bole red, which feels slightly raised under the fingertip, is the diagnostic feature of authentic Iznik production and cannot be successfully imitated.
