About This Artifact
Jewellery of the Viking World
The Viking Age (793–1066 CE) produced a rich tradition of personal adornment in silver, gold, and copper alloy. Viking women wore a distinctive set of dress ornaments: a pair of oval "tortoise" brooches at the shoulders, a central brooch at the neckline, and various pendants and chains connecting them. These objects were simultaneously functional dress accessories and declarations of social status and cultural identity.
The round box brooch — a circular domed piece with a pin mechanism on the reverse — was popular across Scandinavia during the 10th and 11th centuries. This example, with its carefully applied silver foil catching the light against the copper alloy body, demonstrates the Viking metalsmith's mastery of surface decoration. The domed form imitates the precious silver box brooches worn by the elite, making this a status object accessible to a slightly wider social stratum.
Viking Material Culture
Our understanding of Viking jewellery comes primarily from burial finds — Norse paganism required burial with personal possessions for the journey to the afterlife. Women's graves across Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, and the Viking diaspora in Britain and Ireland regularly yield dress ornaments in remarkable states of preservation, giving us an extraordinarily detailed picture of Viking personal style.
