About This Artifact

Ethiopian Christianity and the Processional Cross

Ethiopia adopted Christianity in the 4th century CE under King Ezana of Aksum — making it one of the earliest Christian nations on earth. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church developed a rich and distinctive liturgical tradition over the following sixteen centuries, including an extraordinary tradition of metalwork in bronze and silver.

The processional cross — known in Amharic as qäqwami mäsqäl — is carried on a long wooden staff by priests during church processions and blessings. Each region and period developed its own distinctive cross form: the Aksumite crosses of the 5th–7th centuries, the lattice-pattern crosses of the medieval period, and the elaborate geometric forms of the 15th–17th centuries. This example, with its interlaced geometric openwork, is characteristic of the Amhara or Tigrinya tradition of northern Ethiopia.

Sacred and Artistic Significance

Ethiopian processional crosses are among the most sophisticated examples of African Christian art. Their geometric patterns — derived from both Byzantine Christian models and indigenous Ethiopian design traditions — encode theological meaning: the interlaced patterns represent the eternal nature of God, while the equal-armed cross form references the crucifixion and resurrection equally.
